The Chandigarh administration on Wednesday declared the entire Union Territory a “no flying zone” for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for three days, citing security concerns ahead of the scheduled movement of a VVIP.

In an order issued under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav said the ban would remain in force from zero hours of December 18 till December 20.

The order said the restriction had been imposed in view of emerging security threats and recent incidents involving the use of drones fitted with improvised explosive devices by anti-national elements, and in the interest of ensuring the safety of VVIPs as well as the general public.

The ban, however, will not apply to law enforcement agencies, including police and paramilitary forces, the Indian Air Force, Special Protection Group personnel, and any other agency or individual specifically authorised by the competent government authority.

The district magistrate warned that any violation of the order would attract penal action under Section 223 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other relevant provisions of law.

Given the emergent nature of the situation, the order has been issued ex parte and addressed to the public at large. It will be promulgated by affixing copies on notice boards of the district magistrate’s office and the district courts, and through publication in local newspapers via the Director of Public Relations, UT Chandigarh.
