Unaided teachers at 2 Chandigarh colleges sit in protest seeking revised pay scale

At least 52 unaided teachers of two government-aided colleges in Chandigarh sat on protest Wednesday demanding the implementation of revised pay scales according to the 7th Pay Commission’s recommendations for aided teachers. Several aided teachers also joined the agitation in solidarity, making the total number of protesters around 150.

Twenty-four teachers are protesting at DAV College in Sector 10 and 28 teachers at MCM-DAV College in Sector 36 by sitting outside the principal’s office. The agitation which began at 10 am will continue till 2 pm. The unaided teaching staff were hired in government-aided colleges to teach self-financed courses.

“Except SD College in Sector 32, no private management government-aided college in Chandigarh has till date extended the revised pay scales to the unaided staff in their colleges. The revised pay scale has been pending for aided teachers since January 1, 2016 though it has been granted in all universities, colleges across the nation and even to all employees of the Union territory as well as to aided staff of Chandigarh’s aided colleges,” said Dr Sumit Goklaney who teaches at DAV College and is a member of the Chandigarh Aided College Teachers’ Association (CACTA).

Government-aided colleges in Chandigarh include DAV College; MCM DAV College; GGDSD College, Sector 32; Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36; Sri Guru Singh Gobind College for Women, Sector 26; Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26; and Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 35. These institutes collectively have more than 4,500 students and employ approximately 450 teaching staff and 700 non-teaching staff members.

On October 21, the management of SD College decided to extend the revised pay scale to its unaided teachers with immediate effect, following which CACTA office bearers honoured its principal Dr Ajay Sharma.
