To raise awareness about preservation of heritage monuments among students, CBSE has directed its affiliated schools to start an ‘Adopt a monument’ project for the students between 7 and 17 years, expressing concern over the risk of the country’s cultural heritage along with natural resources being destroyed in the name of economic development and modernisation.
In the project Heritage Education Programme, various activities will be conducted throughout the year to ensure that students are appraised about the historical and architectural importance of over 100-year-old monument, sculpture, caves and buildings. The project states that each school will select a monument first in the vicinity which they want to adopt.
Since there is no such historical monument or sculpture in the city, students will be asked to cover monuments in Punjab. Students will be asked to work in groups on class-based activities, including literature related to its history, architecture, conservation, stories, myths and legends associated with the monument from sources like museums, among others.
Under the project, students will be allowed to take up work like removal of vegetation, cleaning and dusting in and around the monument to help in preservation of monument. Activities such as staging of plays or skit for public relating to the conservation and preservation of monuments have been already underlined by the board.
While, other activities will include painting competition, quiz, clay modelling, debates and extempore, creative writing, poster making, photographic exhibition and competition, post card and brochure making competitions and story telling competition relating to the monument and its environs and plantation of saplings will be there.
The circular issued by CBSE also mentions about post-activity guidelines for the students. The students can develop a public questionnaire to see if their work has improved the condition of the monument and knowledge of the people about the monument, then students can also conduct guided tours for the tourists and general public under the supervision of the teachers. Students who will perform extremely well will be given certificates for their efforts.
