Within a few months of being posted as Assistant Director-cum-In-charge Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB),Sunil Kumar Sekhri has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of corruption.
Sekhri was arrested by CBIs Anti Corruption Branch,Chandigarh,in Delhi.
He was arrested after the owner of a pharmaceutical factory in Baddi lodged a complaint against him with the Anti Corruption Branch,Chandigarh and gave its copy to the Deputy Inspector General of the CBI.
The complainant said Sekhri demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from him,threatening to book him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Earlier,according to the complainant,Sekhri had raided his factory on August 25 and seized some documents. He then reportedly asked the complainant to meet him at his office in Chandigarh,where he allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh.
Sekhri then said he would talk to the complainant in Delhi,the complainant alleged. In Delhi,he met the complainant at a public place and again allegedly made the demand,which was recorded by the complainant.
The complainant then came to Chandigarh. Later,he called Sekhri and said he wanted to meet. Sekhri asked him to meet in Delhi with the money.
The Anti Corruption Branch,which had laid a trap in Delhi,caught Sekhri accepting the money on Sunday.
A case on charges of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Sekhri. He will be produced in a local court in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
Raids at Sekhris house in Prashant Vihar,Delhi,were on till the filing of this report.
Narcotics Control Bureaus tainted record
In the last two years,four officers of the Narcotics Control Bureau have been arrested by the CBI and the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) on charges of corruption.
Drug case against Israeli national
Investigating Officer Inspector Ravi Kant Pawar was arrested by the CBI in 2007,two years after he had arrested Lior
Avi Ben Moyal,an Israeli national on charges of possessing narcotics. Pawar and Head Constable Balwinder Singh were caught demanding Rs 2 crore for Liors acquittal in the case.
Saji Mohan held for running drug racket
On January 27,2009,Saji Mohan,the former zonal director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Chandigarh,who was transferred to Kochi on December 31 last year,was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly running a drug racket.
Officer held for assisting Mohan
On the disclosure of Mohan,another officer of NCB,Chandigarh,was arrested by the CBI for helping him in running the racket.
