It’s a marathon that was conceptualized around 60 years ago,and takes place in the US,UK,and Europe. An annual feature, the Shell Eco Marathon aims at bringing together brilliant young minds from across the globe on one common platform to battle out a war and produce the maximum fuel efficient vehicle. This year,a team of 12 inquisitive engineers from Mechanical Engineering,Electronics & Communication, departments of Chitkara Institute of Engineering & Technology,Rajpura,Punjab decided to participate. They represented their college in the International Car Fiesta – Shell Eco Marathon 2009 Americas, held at Fontana,California and came home, with honours. The credit goes to our brand new wonder car, says the team leader,Ankit Khurana, informing how they formed Team Stealth in November 2008 just to take part in the Shell Eco Marathon Americas April 2009.
FYI: the marathon has four award categories, and our team participated in two: Designing & Perseverance Awards. While we stood first in the Perseverance category for the Strategic planning and Team Spirit for which we got $500,we were ranked fifth in the designing category, tells Ankit, who made the submission on December 16,2008 and four days later were one of the 32 teams invited for the event at Fontana,California in the Gasoline Prototype Challenge. Theirs were the only team from across Asia.
About the wonder car,the team elaborates,Once we had formed the team, our motto was to discover the scholar within. We then started the manufacturing of the car in third week of January 2009. Stealth was made up of Fiberglass Shell covering the aerodynamically proven car with coefficient of drag = 0.05,encompassing an extremely light weight (6.56 kgs) Aluminum Alloy frame, and a self designed steering mechanism. The car has a net weight of 115 kgs,and is powered with a 125 cc (4 stroke, with Twin Iridium Spark Plugs,Exhaustec) engine. For the entire job,the team was classified into various departments, each individual being given an independent task. With the guidance and motivation from the faculty including Gautam Malik,Anoop Kumar Singh and Ravinder Pal Singh, the students were able to manufacture the vehicle within a period of 70 days! The college management supported us with the transportation cost which amounted to about Rs 3.5 lakh from India to US and back, adds Ankit. We chipped in Rs 2.5 lakh, tells Abhijit Sarmah,Territory Manager,Lubricants Bharat Petroleum. It always takes a team to win!
