Like in previous years, peaceniks from India and Pakistan will assemble at the Attari border on August 14-15 midnight to light candles and pray for peace and friendship between India and Pakistan. On the Indian side will be the Hind-Pak Dosti Manch,Folklore Research Academy (FRA),Punarjot and Punjab Jagriti Manch. Seminars and a Punjabi music night will be organised to mark the independence of the two countries.

Manch general secretary Satnam Singh Manak and FRA chief Ramesh Yadav told a press conference here today that they were trying to bridge the gulf between the countries through their gestures, which they hoped would go a long way in strengthening people-to-people relations.

“We know there are people and organisations on both the sides of the border, which are striving for peace”,said Manak. The organisers of the peace vigil announced plans for a seminar on August 13,where speakers and the audience would discuss the problems and prospects of Indo-Pak relations. “Eminent personalities, members of Parliament from India and Pakistan, renowned journalists, intellectuals and social workers will participate in the events,” Manak said.

A play,Deeva baal Punjabi da,directed by Kewal Bhaliwal, will be enacted by artistes from both countries at Virsa Vihar,he added.

A cultural programe will be organised at the Attari grain market from 7.30 pm,where Punjabi pop singers Satwinder Bitti,Satinder Sartaj,Lakhwinder Wadali and Diljaan from India, and Zafar-Allah Lok from Pakistan will perform.

At the stroke of midnight, candles would be lit at the border. On the other side of the border, the South Asia Free Media Association will organise a similar Hind-Pak Dosti Mela,as part of which a seminar on India-Pakistan relations will take place in Lahore on August 13,and candles will be lit on the Pakistani side, said the organisers.

A delegation of 14 journalists headed by Chanchal Manohar Singh will go to Lahore on August 13 to participate in the seminar, while a Pakistani delegation of 25 members, headed by Nusrat Javed, will come to India.
