Ahead of the October 15 Panchayat polls in the state, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar is said to have resigned from his post, just two years after being given the charge. While there is no official confirmation, BJP sources said Jakhar has stepped down as the Punjab BJP president.

Hours after the talk of resignation, BJP called an emergency meeting of the state leadership in Chandigarh on September 30, which will be attended by Punjab and Chandigarh BJP in-charge Vijay Rupani.

Jakhar, who resigned from Congress as its state president in May 2022, and joined the BJP the same month, had been keeping a low profile after the Lok Sabha elections. He was last seen on September 3 during the state party meeting in Chandigarh when the BJP’s membership drive had started.

Rumours spread about Jakhar’s potential resignation after he didn’t attend a BJP state body meeting on Thursday regarding the party’s membership drive in Chandigarh. Jakhar has also been absent from the party’s election campaign for Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.

Anil Sarin, BJP state general secretary, told The Indian Express: “This is totally baseless information. He hasn’t resigned. He didn’t attend yesterday’s meeting but it wasn’t mandatory for the president to attend it. I don’t know who is spreading this false information. He has no differences with anyone in the party. Everything is OK.”

Harjeet Singh Grewal, state vice-president of BJP, refused to comment on the issue. “I don’t want to talk about this subject as of now. But everything will be alright soon,” said Grewal.

According to sources, senior BJP leaders were unhappy after several Congress leaders joined the party and were given key roles in the state. “We will not allow Congressism to come in the BJP,” a senior BJP leader had said.

It is learnt that Jakhar and Union MoS Ravneet Singh Bittu do not share a cordial relationship. He also has a strained relationship with BJP leader Rana Sodhi who won from the Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat.
