The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and the Opposition Congress sounded the bugle for the 2012 Vidhan Sabha elections at the historic Chhappar Mela on Thursday. Both parties had scheduled their rallies at separate venues, which had to be shifted from the fair ground to indoors at the last moment on Wednesday due to inclement weather.

But with the sun shinning bright and warm on Thursday morning, the workers of both parties could be seen directing long queues of SUVs,buses and cars to their respective rally venues.

The most enthusiastic among them were the ticket aspirants for this new Assembly constituency that has been carved out as Dakha after delimitation, which saw the end of Kila Raipur seat.

They were all trying to outdo each other with their show of strength.

While Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal launched a tirade against the Congress, terming it an “anti-Sikh party”,Congress Working Committee member Jagmeet Singh Brar urged the public to “save Punjab from Badal and his clan”. The Rs 800-crore drought relief package sent by the Centre to Punjab remained top on the agenda at both rallies.

Standing by their respective leaders were Manpreet Singh Ayali for SAD and Jassi Khangura for the Congress. With the top leadership of the Congress absent from the rally, the stage was held by Brar,Mohinder Singh Kaypee,Khangura and a new set of Congress leaders, but the mention of “able leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh” punctuated all speeches, barring that of Brar,at regular intervals.
