Finally, after over one-and-half-months of stand off between private service operators and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) over carriage charges, the BSNL on Friday resumed all points of interconnection between its landline phones and mobile phones of the private operators in Punjab,Haryana and Maharashtra.
The services have been restored following directions issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to BSNL to restore the services by Friday. On October 25,TRAI had given BSNL 48 hours to resume all points of interconnection.
The BSNL had disconnected the services on September 18.
However, while responding to the notice,BSNL has requested TRAI to ask private service operators Airtel,Idea and Vodafone to pay the revised carriage charges.
BSNL dues have got to be paid. If private service operators fail to clear the outstanding dues, services may again be disconnected, said a senior BSNL official.
Meanwhile,Chandigarh Telecom Subscribers Association president Randhir Verma said he will appeal to TRAI to direct the operators to compensate the customers who had to face harassment due to this standoff.
The problem was between two operators. The customers, who unnecessarily had to suffer, should be paid rental rebate for two months, he added.
Following the standoff, though BSNL restored the services of Reliance and Tata were restored after a month owing to a direction by a Tribunal, services of Airtel,Idea and Vodafone remained adversely affected.
On October 18,TRAI had asked BSNL to restore the services immediately. BSNL had, however, asked TRAI to withdraw its directions. Later,TRAI gave BSNL 48 hours to restore the services.
