Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched a fresh offensive on Opposition leaders on Wednesday, reminding state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar about his father Balram Jakhar’s presence at the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal’s groundbreaking ceremony and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal of how former Haryana chief minister Chaudhary Devi Lal had hailed Parkash Singh Badal for allowing the canal survey.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Mann asked Sukhbir Badal to come with the farad (revenue records) of his “Oberoi Hotel” in Gurgaon to the open debate. He had challenged all Opposition leaders to a debate on November 1, Punjab Day, on issues confronting the state.

Later, in a statement, the AAP leader dared Sunil Jakhar, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Congress leaders Partap Singh Bajwa and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring not to forget the “sins of their ancestors before shedding crocodile tears” over the SYL canal.

The chief minister accused the Opposition leaders of indulging in theatrics to mislead people. He said that it was well known that their ancestors had committed “this unpardonable crime of constructing the SYL”. “These selfish political leaders had agreed, planned and executed the construction of this canal” to serve their vested interests, he further alleged.

Mann said that everyone knew that former Union minister Balram Jakhar along with Captain Amarinder Singh, then with the Congress, accompanied then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to perform the canal’s groundbreaking ceremony at Kapuri near Rajpura.

“In the picture of the groundbreaking ceremony (of SYL) with silver spade, Balram Jakhar is also seen with Capt Amarinder,” he wrote on X. Similarly, he wrote, former Haryana chief minister Chaudhary Devi Lal had hailed Parkash Singh Badal, his Punjab counterpart then, for allowing the canal survey.

Mann dared the Opposition leaders to also bring to the debate the “settlement papers their parents had signed for the sake of power by deceiving the state and its people”.

The chief minister said that as a child he was assigned the work of saving water for their fields by his father. “Now with the blessings of God, the people of state have bestowed upon me the duty to save the waters of the Sutlej river, which I will perform meticulously,” he added.
