Briefly State : Convict commits suicide inside jail

An inmate lodged at the newly-constructed modern jail in Faridkot committed suicide allegedly by hanging himself from the roof on Monday.

Ludhiana: An inmate lodged at the newly-constructed modern jail in Faridkot committed suicide allegedly by hanging himself from the roof on Monday. Lakhvir Singh — a resident of Bilaspur in Moga district — was serving a murder sentence and was upset over some family problems. However,sources inside the jail claimed that Lakhvir was a drug addict and had died due to an overdose. Two days ago,another jail inmate Kimti Lal had died under mysterious circumstances. Jail Superintendent Tejinder Singh Maur,however,denied the claims. “The two deaths have nothing to due with drug addiction. Lakhvir Singh was upset due to his personal problems.”

Sugar mills found flouting green norms

Jalandhar: The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB),which has been conducting surprise checks of sugar mills in the past few days have found that eight of them were flouting environmental norms. “Among them,Fazilka,Amloh and Nawahshahr Cooperative Sugar Mills were found to be violating the various provisions of the Air Prevention and Control of Pollution Act,1981 and Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act,1974,” said a PPCB officer. The other sugar mills where the checks were conducted and also found violating the green norms are Indian Sucrose Ltd in Mukerian,A B Sugars in Dasuya, Nahar Sugar Mill,Rana Sugars in Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur Cooperative Sugar Mill.

2,000 Hindu families seek J&K citizenship

Jalandhar: Around 2,000 Hindu families,who migrated to J&K during 1947 partition,have still not been provided with the state citizenship rights due to Article 370,which confers special status to J&K. The families will organise a two-day protest in front of the Parliament seeking abolition of Article 370.
