Octroi abolished in Jalandhar Cant
Jalandhar: The Defence ministry has agreed to abolish octroi in Cantonment Board area as the Director General Defence Estates has written a letter to the Executive Officer (EO) Cantonment Board to abolish octroi and at the same time sought objections to the proposal. Jalandhar Cantt constituency MLA Jagbir Brar,told mediapersons that it was a long-pending demand of Jalandhar and Ferozepur cantonments. It may be noted that the Punjab government has already written to the defence ministry about abolishing octroi in the Cantt. MLA Brar said that after abolition of octroi,the Cantonment Board will get Rs 2 crore compensation annually for various development works for which the money used to be collected by charging octroi earlier.
JC Bose fellowship to GNDU prof
Amritsar: Dr Narpinder Singh,Dean (Faculty of Applied Sciences) and Professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology of Guru Nanak Dev University,has been awarded the JC Bose National
Fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology (DST),Ministry of Science and Technology,Govt. of India. This award has been given to Dr Singh in recognition of his performance and contribution in the field of food sciences.
GNDU practicals from February 19
Amritsar: Practical examinations for all classes for the session 2011 of Guru Nanak Dev University would be held from February 19 till March 12. Dr Inderjit Singh,Registrar,said these practical examinations would start at 9 am for the morning group and 1 pm for the evening group. He said the date-sheet for these exams has been sent to all the concerned colleges.
Dal Khalsa slams BJPs Lal Chowk plan
Jalandhar: Coming down heavily on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for planning to hoist the Tricolour at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Jan 26,the Dal Khalsa said the party stoking the communal cauldron in the garb of patriotism. The partys secretary for political affairs Kanwar Pal Singh said in a statement that BJP was bringing the communal cauldron to a boil through sensational ideas. Regarding the Sangh and the BJP ‘providing help’ to both Swami Aseemanand and the Indresh Kumar through their legal cells,he alleged that BJP leaders had two faces. Singh said the soft approach of the establishment in dealing with RSS leader Indresh was a cause of deep worry. The greatest danger from the RSS was that they are carrying out terror activities in the name of real nationalism. The language of violence has become a central feature of Hindutva politics,he said.
Majithia asks patwaris to help in computerisation of records
Amritsar: Former minister and Majitha MLA Bikram Singh Majithia on Friday appealed to patwaris to help in the computerisation of revenue records in the state. He said the computerisation process was on and once the whole record was made online,it would benefit farmers and other citizens to get records related to their property at the click of a mouse.
Man shoots dead wife
Phagwara: A man shot dead his wife after a brief altercation between them late on Thursday night in the Onkar Nagar locality here. According to police,the deceased doubted the fidelity of her husband, and the two got into an argument about it. Police said the accused,Jaskaranjeet Singh,and his wife,Ramneet Kaur (30),along with their two kids had migrated from UP to Phagwara a year-and-a-half back and they had purchased a flat here.
Sarna out of his mind,says Makkar
Amritsar: SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar on Friday took strong exception to statements by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Chief Paramjit Singh Sarna against Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh over the Nanakshahi Calender issue. He said Sarna,who used derogatory remarks against the jathedar made him beleive that he had lost his mental balance.
