Bus passenger dies as broken pipe pierces throat,driver booked Angrej Singh,a 60-year-old resident of Romana Ajit Singh village,died after a broken support pipe of a passenger seat of a bus pierced through his throat. The bus was going towards Dabwali from Bathinda when the accident occurred on Tuesday morning near Gurusar Sainewala village. The police have booked bus driver Jaswinder Singh under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Police said Angrej was taken to a hospital in Dabwali where he succumbed to the injury. New 66 KV sub-station to come up at Sangrur Member of Parliament Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa laid the foundation stone of a 66 KV power substation at Banjara Kalan in Sangrur on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion,he said with the commissioning of the substation,the surrounding six villages would get direct benefit and around 10 villages would get indirect benefit. He said the Rs 3.6-crore project would be completed within four months. Punjab Rattan for two defence personnel In recognition of the distinguished services of late Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Arora (Retd) and Air Marshal Arjan Singh (Retd) in defending the boundaries of the country,Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has announced to bestow Punjab Rattan awards to the two. Lt Gen Arora commanded 2 Punjab Regiment during 1947-48 hostilities and saw active action during 1962,1965 and 1971 operations. During the 1971 Indo-Pak War,Arora was the Eastern Army Commander entrusted with the operations in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Air Marshal Arjan Singhs flying career started in the North West Frontier Province. During the Second World War,he commanded No 1 Squadron (Tigers) at Imphal from February 1943 to November 1944. Poor construction in schools: CM orders probe Taking a serious note of the poor quality of construction work and supply of substandard furniture in all 21 new model schools established under the Centrally-sponsored scheme,Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has ordered an inquiry to take action against the erring officers and contractors. The decision was taken at a meeting with the principals of these schools at the CMs residence on Wednesday. Director General School Education Krishan Kumar was present at the meeting. Badal asked his Principal Secretary D S Guru to personally look into the complaints and take strict action against those found guilty. On the issue of shortage of teaching staff,the CM asked the school education department to immediately post teachers. Sukhbir unware of political reality Reacting to a statement of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal that his government would return to power in the state,Congress MLA from Qila Raipur Jassi Khangura said on Wednesday Sukhbir seemed to be deluded and unware of political reality. Sukhbir has conveniently forgotten that his father failed to be re-elected to office on three previous occasions. In the last four years,the ruling party has given away thousands of acres of public and panchayat land to vested interests,numerous NRIs have lost their assets and the state treasury has been plundered for private publicity. The people will outrightly reject the SAD-BJP regime in the coming polls, he said in a statement. Four booked for attempt to murder The Anandpur Sahib Police have booked four persons in an attempt to murder case. According to SHO Manveer Singh Bajwa,one of the arrested men is the Kiratpur Sahib block president of Congress,Mahinderpartap Singh. The three others Roop Singh,Gulzar Singh and Vikramjeet Singh are from Bhaddal village. Around 10.30 pm on Tuesday,they had gone to a liquor vend at Agampur where they had a fight with a vend worker. One of them allegedly fired at him later.
