Shimla: A first-ever two-day-long Confederation of Indian Industry workshop on apples — which began at the apple producing Kotgarh town on Tuesday — focussed on adopting new techniques,water conservation and using better planting material to improve quality and yield to meet international competition. Director (Horticulture) Gurdev Singh,who was a key speaker at the workshop,recalled that the late Satyanand Stokes had pioneered in introducing commercial production of apple as a cash crop from Kotgarh. But now climate change and global warming has had an impact in the fruit producing belts of the state,he added.

Two truck-loads of pashmina wool seized

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Police have seized two trucks containing pashmina wool in the border district of Kinnaur. The wool was allegedly smuggled from Tibet under Chinese occupation. Kinnaur SP Ashok Kumar said,“More than 5,000 kg of pashmina was seized from Kharo near Reckong Peo during a surprise check. The driver of the vehicle could not produce valid permit and other documents to carry the pashmina.”

Haryana seeks Japanese investment

Chandigarh: Haryana has offered to Japan to initiate exchange and training programmes in areas of technical and health management and has sought investment in sectors of pharma and biomedical equipment.
