Two killed as train hits tractor at unmanned railway crossing
Amritsar
: Two persons died and four others sustained injuries as the tractor-trolley they were traveling in hit the Amritsar-Khemkaran diesel multiple unit (DMU) train at an unmanned railway crossing near Patti in Tarn Taran district on Tuesday. The deceased are Sukhchain Singh,30,driver of the tractor and Gurwinder Singh,16. The injured have been admitted in the local civil hospital. Sources said the train was running ten minutes before the scheduled time. The police have registered a case. Investigations are on to find out whether the guard of the train was on board at the time of the accident. Two lives were lost at the same railway crossing before.

Himachal to get 3 medical colleges

: The Himachal government has proposed to set up three new private medical colleges in the state,one each in Mandi,Una and Hamirpur. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal announced this while speaking at a public function in Dharamsala. He said medical education and hospital facilities in the state would receive a boost with the setting up of ESIC Medical College at Ner Chowk in Mandi district. The CM said the college would start admissions from next year and have 50 per cent of seats reserved for students with Himachal domicile. Health Minister Dr Rajiv Bindal was also present.

Rain-hit roads may alter car rally route

: With rains damaging roads across Himachal Pradesh this year,the route planned for Raid de Himalaya car rally could be changed. An official spokesperson of the Himalayan Motorsport,the organising body,said the first stretch of the competition starting from Nalagarh and running through the Sirsa river bed had been cancelled on account of excessive water level in the river. Almost all routes to be covered on the first two days of the rally are blocked at present and efforts are on to clear them. The stretches from Mallah near Pinjore to Naina Tikker and Naina-Balag to Cheog are not accessible due to the overflowing Ghaggar and Giri rivers,respectively. The rally is scheduled to be flagged off from Shimla on October 9 and conclude at Manali on October 16.

HPU convocation on November 8
Shimla
: Eighteenth convocation of Himachal Pradesh University will be held at the university auditorium on November 8. PhD degrees and gold medals for post- graduation and under-graduation courses will be conferred on the students for the year 2009. A spokesperson of the university said the convocation would be presided over by Himachal Pradesh Governor and HPU Chancellor Urmila Singh,while Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal will be the chief guest.

Dayanand school wins wildlife quiz
Shimla
: Dayanand Public School of Shimla won the wildlife quiz organised by WWF India,Himachal Chapter. Rupali Bhan of Dayanand school stood first,while Pulkit Kanwar of the same school and Gaurav Pandey of Bal Shiksha Niketan finished second and third,respectively. WWF India state director Vandana Thaplyal said the winners would participate in the national wildlife quiz to be held in Delhi.
