Both sides of the bridge are connected by unpaved roads, while the bridge itself is elevated, posing a constant risk to commuters.A bridge connecting the villages of Jhamapur and Tira near Mohali, instead of being a help, has become a source of hardship for local residents. Recently, a young tractor driver lost his life when his vehicle overturned while navigating a rough, uneven path leading to the bridge. The accident occurred because the bridge, though complete, lacks proper connecting roads on either side. The tractor overturned while trying to climb the elevated bridge via the muddy, makeshift path.
Although the bridge’s construction was completed some time ago, the absence of proper approach roads has made commuting extremely difficult. Both sides of the bridge are connected by unpaved roads, while the bridge itself is elevated, posing a constant risk to commuters.
For the children in the area, the senior secondary school in Tira village is the only major educational centre nearby. Every day, a large number of children from Jhamapur travel there to study. However, due to the poor condition of the roads, they are forced to walk through dust, mud, and slippery paths, especially during the rainy season, facing dangerous and unhealthy conditions.
Impact on trade and daily life
This area not only connects Jhamapur and Tira but also serves as a vital link for nearby villages. It is crucial for agricultural activities, milk transportation, and the supply of vegetables. Tractors, trolleys, and trucks frequently pass through, but the risk of accidents remains high.
Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi visited the site and observed the difficulties faced by the villagers. He stated that no immediate action was taken by the administration even after the fatal accident. He emphasised that crores of rupees were spent on constructing the bridge, but until it is connected with proper roads, the investment will not benefit the public.
He mentioned that a letter has been sent to the PWD minister and a request has been made to the Deputy Commissioner to send a team to the site and begin the road construction work without delay.
Local leaders Ajayb Singh Bakarpur, Gurmeet Singh Siyan, and other respected villagers were also present at the site.
