The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday gave the Punjab Government two weeks to respond to former minister Bikram Singh Majithia’s petition for anticipatory bail in a disproportionate assets case registered in July.

Majithia, a senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and brother-in-law of party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, moved the high court after an Amritsar court dismissed his anticipatory bail application.

The former minister was arrested from his home on June 30. His judicial custody, first extended till August 28, was further prolonged to September 6. He remains lodged in New Nabha Jail near Patiala.

A Mohali court rejected Majithia’s regular bail plea on August 19, citing the seriousness of the charges and the ongoing investigation. On August 22, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau filed a 40,000-page chargesheet against him in the case.

Also on Thursday, a Mohali court dismissed his plea for a separate cell in jail, directing that he continue to share a barrack with other inmates.

The Vigilance Bureau has alleged that Majithia amassed Rs 540 crore, routed through shell companies. On September 8, the Bhagwant Mann-led Cabinet granted prosecution sanction against him under section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Majithia first approached the high court on July 3, seeking relief against what he called his “illegal arrest and remand”.
