Bike theft: Cops sing a different tune now

Less than a week after Newsline reported the Chandigarh Police’s lackadaisical attitude in registering an FIR regarding a stolen motorcycle, which had forced the complainants to knock on the doors of the judiciary,a case of theft was finally registered today.

Less than a week after Newsline reported the Chandigarh Police’s lackadaisical attitude in registering an FIR regarding a stolen motorcycle, which had forced the complainants to knock on the doors of the judiciary,a case of theft was finally registered today.

On March 25,Newsline had highlighted the plight of two brothers,Sanjeev Kumar and Sanjay Sohil, both residents of Manimajra, who were running helter-skelter to lodge their complaint with the police, but their efforts were coming to a naught.

According to the brothers, the two-wheeler (HP-12C-2142) was stolen from Bank Colony,Manimajra,on the intervening night of February 28 and March 1. Sohil went to the Manimajra police station on March 4,where Station House Officer (SHO) Kehar Singh and Sub-Inspector Rajinder Prasad allegedly misbehaved with him.

When asked earlier,SHO Kehar Singh had categorically stated that “after verification, they had come to the conclusion that no motorcycle was stolen”. He had added: “All those people whose motorcycles or scooters are stolen in Punjab or Haryana come to us since they know the Chandigarh Police promptly register an FIR.”

But on Monday,he was singing a different tune. Asked what had changed now that the complaint was registered today, the SHO emphasised that the FIR has to be registered in every case. “Woh hamari mitti kuttne par lage hue hai… High Court chala gaye hai… FIR to karni parni thi (They are bent on damaging our reputation and have filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. We had to register the FIR). Let us see where the investigation leads,” said SHO Kehar Singh.

Condemning the Chandigarh Police for its inaction, counsel for the brothers, advocate Ranjan Lakhanpal said: “It is extremely unfortunate that the complainants had to move courts for such a simple case.”

But the registration of FIR won’t stop the brothers from pursuing the case against the Chandigarh Police. “If the police think that we will withdraw the petition, then they are grossly mistaken. I will demand strict action against the guilty police officers and compensation for harassment. If they can register the FIR now,why couldn’t they do so on the first day?” asked Lakhanpal.
