Badal kickstarts SGPC poll campaign

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today launched the campaign for the upcoming SGPC elections here at a function to observe the martyrdom day of Baba Jiwan Singh. He “cautioned” the gathering against the “negative” campaign by the Congress,accusing the party of spreading communal hatred.

“The Congress is trying to hijack the SGPC elections. That is why they are interfering in religious affairs,” he said.

BJP Parliamentary Party chairman L K Advani was the chief guest on the occasion. He called Badal “a great warrior”. Recalling the days of the Emergency,Advani said,“Even during Emergency time,a large number of SAD workers went to jail,and CM Parkash Singh Badal sacrificed a lot.”

He suggested that the function be held at Anandpur Sahib from next year,to which the CM agreed.

Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal also addressed the gathering. He said the state government’s schemes were saving the common man “otherwise,the Centre is making all efforts to to make life difficult for the aam aadmi”.

Badal,meanwhile,also announced construction of a bhawan in the name of Baba Jiwan Singh on two acres of land in Ludhiana. He also announced that,either in Punjabi university or GNDU,a chair will be established in name of Baba Jiwan Singh.

Former Lok Sabha deputy speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal urged Advani to push for a uniform education system in the country.
