ATC to begin operations on Monday

PGIMER Operation theatres to be finally handed over to authorities on April 9 after much-needed structural repairs

PGIMER Operation theatres to be finally handed over to authorities on April 9 after much-needed structural repairs

After a wait of more than one year,PGIMER’s long awaited Advanced Trauma Centre (ATC) is set to become fully functional by Monday, after causing considerable inconvenience to patients who were admitted to the latest addition to the premier tertiary-care hospital.

With this announcement, also comes a breather for hundreds of patients who had to be wheeled in and out of the ATC to emergency wing for surgeries and routine follow ups,as the Operation Theatres (OTs) were not in a functioning state for the past three-and-a-half-months.

The ATC was hastily and partially made operational at the end of April,2011 by the then director of PGI,Dr K K Talwar, who demitted office on April 30.

The ATC has made headlines for all the wrong reasons beginning with patients being moved to the unfinished building,to a false ceiling collapsing,to poor workmanship leading to cracks in the new building. The building has been suffering from various structural faults.

However, the biggest blow for the authorities was when after much dilly dallying four out of seven OTs,which were made functional were closed due to poor workmanship. Consequently, the Trauma OT had been shifted back to the old Nehru building.

In 2011,a false ceiling fell off near the minor operation theatre. This year, flooring and water leakage problems forced closure of the OT. Even the wall near the stairs had clear signs of seepage.

The PGI’s engineering department had pointed out the flaws at Level III,where the OT complex was located,“The flooring of the store is lower than that of the OT,which leads to water collection in the store as there is no drainage there,” said officials.

Sources in the hospital say that after constant nudging by higher-ups,including the director of PGIMER,Dr Y K Chawla, the OTs are finally being handed over after the much needed repairs to PGI authorities on April 9.

Also,by next week, the ATC will also be made fully functional with the departments of General Surgery,Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery, which is already partially functioning from ATC.

However, uncertainty continues on whether all the patients will be shifted from PGI’s main emergency wing to the ATC,as was announced previously.

Since its functioning in April 2011,1,007 patients were admitted to the ATC and 69 patients have died at the due to various reasons.

The new OT at ATC is technically more advanced in terms of light system and has an onscreen surgery facility. The building has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 50 crore.
