Trial begins against SI in graft case

A local court here Friday started the trial against suspended Sub-Inspector Naveen Sharma and his alleged mediator Som Nath Aneja,who were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in September 2012 on charges of corruption. Sharma,who was with the Chandigarh Economic Offences Wing,was arrested on a complaint by Sukhbir Singh Shergill,who had alleged that Sharma demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh for facilitating the bail of the victim’s wife in a company fraud case of which Sharma was the investigating officer.

Mandi scheme under Kairon’s name: Hooda

PANCHKULA: Asking the National Agricultural Bank of Rural Development (NABARD) to reduce interest rates on loans to benefit farmers,CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda,on Friday said that the government has decided to launch the Mandi Payment Scheme in the state in the name of former Punjab CM Partap Singh Kairon,to enable the farmers to get good prices. Hooda said that under this scheme,debit cards will be made available to all the farmers of the state,which will be fitted with a smart chip to enable them to know the actual price and weight of their produce at the time of its sale in the mandis.

ITBP jawan attacked by villagers

PANCHKULA: An attack on an ITBP jawan who intervened to stop a quarrel between local villagers of Madanpur triggered a row with the villagers,who alleged that in retaliation,their houses were ransacked later by the 20-25 jawans of the force who also took away the wares of some vendors. Police have booked three people for the attack on the ITBP jawan who received a head injury late Thursday evening but is now stable.

Chargesheet filed in attempt-to-murder case

Chandigarh: A chargesheet was filed in a local court on Friday against five persons accused in an attempt-to-murder case dating May 2,2013. The accused,Mohd Wasim,Raj Kumar,Anil Kumar,Phool Chand and Ajay were arrested by the police after the victim,Ravi Shankar,alleged that he was attacked and robbed of his money by the accused.

70-year-old arrested for carrying ganja

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Police arrested a 70-year-old resident of Hallo Majra village for allegedly carrying 3 kg of ganja in his possession. According to the police,the accused,Chiranjeev Jha was arrested in the routine checks conducted by the police. A case was registered under Section 20 of the NDPS Act at Sector 31 police station.

78 BPL people awarded certificates

CHANDIGARH: A total of 78 Below the Poverty Line(BPL) beneficiaries were awarded certificates and tool kits in a function organised by Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) and Adult Education Association,UT at their office in Sector-38 A,Chandigarh. The function was organised on the occasion of successful completion of training of 50 BPL beneficiaries in electrical,technical,purse and bag making courses held by Jan Shikshan Sansthan in association with the MC.
