Three held on robbery charges
Ambala: A gang of three dacoits who had allegedly committed robbery in the Sony showroom at BC Bazaar in Ambala Cantonment on October 25 last,were nabbed by a team of CIA and STF staff on a tip-off on Tuesday night. All the three dacoits Vijay,Rajesh and Vishal belong to Sonepat district and had looted cash and electronics costing over Rs 4 lakh.
Elocution competition held
Chandigarh: Syndicate Bank organised an elocution competition at Moti Ram Arya School in Panchkula on Wednesday. Children from Moti Ram Arya School in Sector 27 also participated in the competition. The competition was held under two categories i.e. for students from 5th to 8th Class and from class 9th to 12th. The topics for the students were issues which concerned the society as a whole and relevant to the development of India as an World Power. Students spoke on the various topics like Can we have a corruption free Society; Relevance of Gandhisim in modern Society, Commonwealth Games: Should India spend the money somewhere else; What we like most about India; Healthy food for a healthy body.
Rs 2 crore grant for Punjabi University
Patiala: The Ministry of Tourism,Government of India,has extended financial grant to the tune of Rs 2 crore to the Punjabi Universitys Department of Tourism,Hospitality and Hotel Management for developing its infrastructure and creating other facilities. Director of the Department S M Verma said the Department organised a programme,Yes Chef where the students prepared and served sumptuous snacks in a professional manner. The outlet,he said,was managed entirely by students under the guidance and supervision of the faculty.
Advanced Cardiac Centre at PGI turns 1
Chandigarh: More than 5000 cardiac procedures and 1250 open heart surgeries were performed by the Advanced Cardiac Centre Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research during past 365 days. This was stated at a function organised to observe the first foundation day of the Advanced Cardiac Centre.
The director of the PGIMER,Prof K K Talwar,presided over the function. One year ago,on this day Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh,had formally inaugurated and dedicated the centre to the nation. Since then several land-marks have been achieved by the Advanced Cardiac Centre,where all the faculty members and the staff have contributed to the newer dimensions in quality health care.
Punjabi University don invited by UNESCO
Patiala: Jagtar Singh,Professor and Head of the Department of Library and Information Science and President,Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS),has been invited by the UNESCO Expert Group Meeting on Media and Information Literacy to be held at Bangkok from November 4 to 6.
Womens Rights Day observed at Punjabi University
Patiala: Punjabi Universitys Women Studies Centre,in collaboration with the department of Social Work,organised a two-day exhibition-cum-sale on the university campus to boost the skills and abilities of differently-abled students. The director of the Centre,Manju Verma inaugurated the exhibition where candles,greeting cards and other articles made by these students were displayed. Earlier,the Centre organised a workshop on Womens Human Rights on Tuesday for the students of PG Diploma in Women and Child Development. Prof Sherry Sabbarwal from Panjab Universitys Department of Sociology dwelt on article 30 in the Universal Declaration of Human rights. Stating that all rights enjoy the same status,she said that these cant be put in any hierarchical position in everyday life.
