Rajbhasha prize distribution function held
Chandigarh: The Income tax department on Monday organised its annual Rajbhasha prize distribution function. All the commissioner and additional joint commissioners of income tax stationed at Chandigarh participated in the function. The function was presided over by Chief Commissioner,N W income tax B S Dhillon who gave away the prizes and shields to the winner of various Hindi competitions. Addressing the participants,Dhillon congratulated the prize winners and expressed the hope that other will get inspiration from them. It is our moral as well as constitutional responsibility to do our maximum work in Hindi, he said while appealing all the officers and staff to their maximum work in Hindi.
Woman sets herself on fire,dies
Chandigarh: A 29-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in Bapu Dham Colony here today. The victim,Aarti,was rushed to the PGI with severe burn injuries where she died. The police are yet to ascertain the reason and are questioning her family.
The victim is survived by her husband Ashutosh,a street vendor,and three children. The incident took place at 3.30 pm when the woman locked herself in a room and soaked herself in kerosene oil and set herself on fire.
Neighbours called the police when they heard the cries of the woman and a thick smoke coming out of the house.
We are not ruling out any foul play but at present the reason behind her death is unclear,investigations are on, said Inspector Sri Parkash,SHO,Sector 26 police station.
Youth arrested for raping minor
Chandigarh: The police today arrested a 20-year-old youth,a resident of Sector 40,on charge of raping a minor on the pretext of marrying her.
The victim in her complaint alleged that the accused took her to Gujarat in July this year while promising to marry her there,but repeatedly raped her. He brought her back to the city on October 9 and left her. The police today medically examined both the victim and the accused and registered a case of rape,cheating and criminal intimidation against the accused identified as Vicky.
The police said said the 17-year-old girl used to live in Sector 40 before shifting to Kharar where she met the accused.
Workshop on trauma care held
Mullana: An international workshop on emergency,trauma,critical care,disaster and acute surgery was organised by the MM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research on the premises of the Maharishi Markandeshwar University on Monday.
Dr Arvind Thergaonkar,Deputy Director of the Directorate General of Health Services in India,was the chairperson on the occasion. The guest faculties who attended the workshop were Dr Isaac Ashkenazi,Professor of
Disaster Medicine from Ben Gurion University,Israel,and also faculty at Harward University,Dr Vikas Kapil,Associate Director in Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention,Dr Mamta Swaroop,faculty of trauma surgery and critical care in Northwestern University,Chicago and Dr Sagar Galwankar,Faculty of Emergency Medicine and Global Health in the University of South Florida,Tampa in United States.
Punjabi University announces dates for submission of forms
Patiala: Punjabi Universitys Controller Examination Pawan Kumar Singla today stated that the university has fixed October 15,2010,as the last date for the receipt of forms/fee for private candidates without late fee,who are to appear in the annual examination of March/April 2011. He added that students can also submit their forms/fee till November 15,2010 with Rs 800 late fee,till December 15,2010 with Rs 1200 late fee,till January 15,2011,with 5000 late fee,and till March 15,2011 with Rs 10,000 late fee.
Red Ribbon Train arrives in Ambala
Ambala: More than 20 lakh people died of HIV and AIDS by December 2008 after it was discovered in the USA in 1981 and in India in 1986. This was stated by Haryana Family Welfare Department Director while addressing the people gathered at a function at Ambala Cantonment Railway Station on arrival of the Red Ribbon Train with exhibition of AIDS and HIV today. He said that 2.35 million people were suffering from the disease in India and the number of such patients in Haryana was 2000. On arrival of the train,it was received by the Haryana Health Commissioner Rajan Gupta who later declared open the exhibition on the disease. National AIDS Control Society Representative and Incharge of Red Ribbon Exhibition Daman Ahuja informed that the train was flagged off with the cooperation of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation Society on December 1,2007.He said that the train would reach 152 stations and had already covered 137. He appealed to the people to come more and more in number to get information with regard to the AIDS and HIV through the exhibition. Local IMA President Dr D.S. Goel spoke on the causes and preventions of the disease.
