UT to shut down Manimajra sub-office
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Administration has decided to close down sub office Manimajra where ration cards under Public Distribution Scheme were issued manually. This is being done after complaints were received regarding the manual issuance and functioning of the sub office. With a switch over being made towards smart cards,these are available at the main office. In case adequate staff is available for office at Manimajra a view would be taken later regarding the opening of a smart card window.
Man convicted of graft loses job
Ambala: Deputy Commissioner S P Srow terminated the services of one Vijay Prakash Patwari holding the charge of Mehmoodpur Brahmana Patwar Halqa. He was dismissed from service after he was convicted with one-year imprisonment by special sessions judge Krishans Kumar recently. The vigilance department had caught him red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from one Vijay Prakash for mutation of land on September 20,2005.
Inter-school anthem & patriotic song contest
Chandigarh: As a part of the ongoing Sher-e-Punjab Lala Lajpat Rai 82nd Martyrdom fortnight (from November 17-30),the Servants of the People Society,Lala Lajpat Rai Bhawan,Sector 15,organised inter-school national anthem and patriotic song singing competition. Around 150 students from 20 schools participated from urban and rural schools of Chandigarh. Onkar Chand,chairman,Servants of the People Society addressed the students and highlighted the importance of Lala Lajpat Rai as a role model for the youth and urged to carry forward the traditions set by one of the greatest freedom fighters and crusade of social reforms and moral values.
In his address,K N Pathak,former Vice-Chancellor Panjab University who was the chief guest commended that participation is much more important than winning a prize which leads to better society and commitment to serve the people. He also motivated the students to adopt values advocated by our ancient spiritual and gurus to lead a religious,healthy and contended life.
Body found in field
Ambala: An unidentified body with face burnt was found from the fields of Chhotgarh village under Shehzadpur PS on NH-72 today. The deceased,in his 30s,was murdered and then his body was thrown in the fields. The face had turned black after it was burnt to hide the identity. The police took the body in its possession.
Free eye camp
Ambala: A free eye operation and investigation camp was organized at Sardari Lal College of Education,Nohni 15 kms,from here today. The camp was arranged in collaboration with SAP Memorial Dharmarth Hospital at Kurukshetra. Eye surgeons from the hospital conducted investigation and operations free of cost. The patients were provided spectacles and medicines. College principal H R Popli said the aim of the organising todays event was to provide social service to the needy people and motivate the students and teachers for community service through NSS.
