Army Major booked for dowry harassment

The Panchkula police have registered a case on charges of dowry harassment against an Army major and his family following a written complaint lodged by his wife.

Major Anshula,posted with the Western Command in Chandimandir,has accused husband Major Vivek Pandey,father-in-law Raminder Prasad Pandey,mother-in-law Usha Pandey and brother-in-law Vikas Pandey in her compliant for harassing and torturing her for dowry. The police have registered a case under Section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police,Anshula,posted in the EME branch in Chandimandir,married Vivek,a resident of Aliganj in Lucknow,posted in Durg Mulla in Kupwara (J&K) at present,on November 23,2005.

The victim alleged in her complaint that soon after the wedding,her husband and in-laws started demanding money from her,besides torturing her. The officer said her in-laws were forcing her to get her mothers house in Sector 12,Panchkula,transferred in their name. The victim also alleged that her husband had purchased a flat in Lucknow and forced her to pay the EMIs, said a police officer,on condition of anonymity.

The couple had reportedly been given counselling sessions by the Western Command authorities before the victim approached the police.

While Major Anshula refused to comment on the issue,District Superintendent of Police Varinder Singh said: The couple was earlier posted in Pathankot (Punjab). For the proper upbringing of their two-and-a-half-year-old son,the victim moved to Panchkula where her mother lives. The Chandimandir police are investigating the matter.

Chandimandir Station House Officer Jangsher Singh said on the complaint of Major Anshula,a case has been registered against her husband and in-laws.
