According to family members, Jarnail Singh was at home on Wednesday afternoon when four masked individuals arrived in a car and began firing at him. He tried to escape, but the bullets hit him directly, leading to his immediate death.
(Representational Image) A former member of the Gopi Ghanshyampura gang, Jarnail Singh, was gunned down in his Sathiala village under Punjab’s Amritsar district Wednesday afternoon. Four unidentified people came in a car and stormed Singh’s house, opened fire and managed to escape after the crime, said the police.
After receiving information about the crime, the police immediately arrived at the scene. They said Singh’s body has been taken into custody for postmortem examination, and surveillance cameras in the village are currently under scrutiny. The motive behind the murder remains unclear at present. The local police have filed a case against unknown assailants.
According to sources, Jarnail Singh had previously served as a student leader and was associated with the notorious Gopi Ghanshyampura gang for nearly five years. The gang members were involved in extortion from businessmen, kidnappings, illegal arms trading, and other crimes. They said Jarnail Singh also faced charges related to extortion, firing gunshots, and possession of illegal firearms.
Gopi Ghanshyampura was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh in 2018.
