Aman Kachroo’s roommate in trouble over Facebook post

Even before the dust could settle on the Aman Kachroo ragging-death case, the Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College here is caught in another, albeit minor, storm.

Even before the dust could settle on the Aman Kachroo ragging-death case, the Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College (RPMC) here is caught in another, albeit minor, storm. This time, four women students have accused a male student of sexual harassment. Interestingly, the accused,Ashish Saklani, was a roommate of Kachroo and a key witness to the latter’s violent ragging that resulted in his death. Saklani’s testimony had played a significant role in ensuring a speedy judgement in the case, announced last Thursday.

The four women students of RPMC – Himachal Pradesh government’s second premier medical institution – have accused Saklani of posting some indecent comments about them on the social networking site Facebook. The girls immediately brought the matter to the notice of Principal Dr Anil Chauhan and the college wasted no time in suspending the enrollment of Saklani for six months. A 12-member inquiry panel of the college headed by Dr Sita Thakur,Head of the Gynecology Department, has endorsed the principal’s decision.

Dr Chauhan told The Indian Express,“This is one of those incidents that the college will not condone. We have already learnt some lessons, how indiscipline and laxity on the part of the college had resulted in an unsavory ragging case last year. I have taken faculty members and also some parents into confidence to deal sternly with all cases of indiscipline, especially sexual harassment”.

“In the 46-page glossary – Anti-Ragging Regulatory Measures and Hostel Rules – which the college has recently brought out,we propose to frame firm guidelines to deal with cases of sexual harassment. In fact, this is the next important thing which is coming up in the medical and other institutions as the strength of the girl students is touching almost 50 per cent,” said Dr Chauhan.

The case of sexual harassment was reported on November 2 after the four women students submitted a written complaint along with certain proofs about Saklani’s indecent remarks against them. Later, sensing trouble,Saklani removed those comments from his Facebook page.

The case, however, did not close with Saklani’s evasive action as the State Women’s Commission sought a full report about the incident and action taken by the college authorities. “ I have been told over phone by the principal that action has already been taken against the accused. I feel quite satisfied with the prompt action but have directed the principal to act firmly since the college has already been put in a bad light after Aman Kachroo’s ragging-death. Such incidents should not be allowed to recur”,Ambika Sood of the Commission told The Indian Express. Sood added she would like the college authorities to set a precedent by going beyond the six-month suspension and expelling Saklani from the college.
