All eyes on Bunny to carry forward Kanwaljit’s legacy

After the death of senior Punjab minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh, all eyes are on his only son Jasjit Singh Bunny to carry forward the legacy of not only his father but also late grandfather Dara Singh, who was the Education Minister in the Pepsu government.

After the death of senior Punjab minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh, all eyes are on his only son Jasjit Singh Bunny to carry forward the legacy of not only his father but also late grandfather Dara Singh, who was the Education Minister in the Pepsu government.

With the demise of the four-time Akali MLA,his traditional stronghold Banur Assembly constituency in Patiala district has fallen vacant. Besides,he has also left a berth in the Punjab Cabinet. As the precedence in the polity, especially followed by the Akalis,Bunny seems to be the ideal choice of the ruling SAD for contesting the Banur Assembly by-election,which will be held within six months from now. Though no such decision or declaration is made as yet,Kanwaljit’s followers are expecting such a declaration on the bhog ceremony.

Moreover, the name of the replacement for the Cabinet seat is also eagerly awaited. Bunny had unsuccessfully contested the February 2007 Punjab Assembly elections from Kharar, but in the changed scenario,it seems that father’s death will swing the tide in his favour.

Political observers feel that from the turnout at Capt Kanwaljit’s last rites,it seems that sympathy of people will help his son’s political career. “There are numerous instances where political novices managed landslide victories riding on sympathy wave,” says a senior politician.

Daljeet Kaur (ex-Kharar MLA) and Satwant Kaur Sandhu (ex-Chamkaur Sahib MLA and Minister),widows of slain Akali MLAs Bachittar Singh and Ajaib Singh Sandhu, respectively,Bikramjeet Singh Khalsa (Khanna MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary) and Tej Parkash Singh (Payal MLA and ex-minister),sons of slain MP and Punjab minister Basant Singh Khalsa and former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, respectively, have carried forward the legacy of their late kin.

When Capt Kanwaljit had introduced his 39-year-old advertising professional son in politics,he had surprised many. Bunny’s defeat by a margin of 13,615 votes to Congress nominee Balbir Sidhu had cut short the celebrations of father’s hat-trick victory by a record margin of 42,651 votes.

“Though we lost from Kharar, but with the SAD-BJP assuming power in Punjab,we will fulfill all promises made to the Kharar electorate,” was the immediate reaction of Capt Kanwaljit on his son’s unsuccessful debut.
