Internationally acclaimed designer Anuj Sharma likes to break the rules & he’s doing it again with ‘Button Masala’

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word fashion designer,an Indian one at that? If your answer has one of the following words – glamourous, expensive, over the top – then it’s time you met Anuj Sharma. Apart from being a senior faculty member at the National Institute of Design (NID),Sharma is an internationally acclaimed fashion designer and a regular at the fashion weeks. A non-conformist to fashion rules,Sharma’s USP is that he moves away from cliches and addresses fashion from a common man’s perspective. “I like my clothes to be useful for more than once. The wearer should be able to change the style and be creative in his or her own way,” spoke Sharma who comes to the city on an invitation by INIFD,Chandigarh at their All India Facilitators training program. It was also an opportunity for him to share with students and teachers his mantra for success. “Apart from style, the clothes have to be functional in nature,” mentioned Sharma. Taking that thought forward, his next collection is themed ‘Button Masala’. “It’s all to do with buttons and belts and a piece of cloth,” explained the designer who has worked out designs that allows the wearer to work out a new style each time the outfit is draped. “The belts and buttons will allow that flexibility. One outfit can be worn in 20 different ways,” the designer’s line of thought is not just ground breaking but moves away from the fact that designer clothes are a one-time thing. “Also why shouldn’t one size be flexible enough to fit someone lean to someone well endowed? Both should get a feel that the outfit has been made for them,” rallies Sharma as he showcases an outfit from his previous collection ‘Knot for me’ that makes remarkable use of knots and drapery without any elaborate stitching and embellishments. “Stylish yet practical,” he sums it up aptly.

All for one INIFD’s All India Facilitators Training Program that ran for three days brought in more than 250 INIFD facilitators from across the country. The panel that addressed them included Stefania Gulina,a senior fashion designer from Milan; designer Anuj Sharma; Kunal Savarkar, architect and director in Quizcraft Events & Communications; Adittya Nath Mubayi,an architect and a lifestyle columnist focusing on luxury brands, specially in the automobile and hospitality sectors. He is also a quizmaster, and is director in Quizcraft Events & Communications. The facilitators were also addressed by Kiran Malhotra,an accomplished client-driven training professional along with Wing Commander Bhupendra Renjen,a trainer with over 30 years of experience. Completing the group was Akshay Tholia,a renowned international trainer in the field of textiles and apparel. He is Director,Training & Consultancy at SARV International.
