AI-based smart parking project, hike in booking charges for community centres
Chandigarh MC to discuss AI-based smart parking project and proposed 40% hike in community centre booking charges today.

Two major civic proposals that could impact public life in Chandigarh are set to come up for discussion and approval in the General House meeting of the Municipal Corporation on Monday. One concerns the implementation of a city-wide AI-based smart parking project, and the other relates to a sharp hike in the booking charges for community centres — both of which are expected to generate intense debate.
The proposal to revise the booking rates of community centres could see charges rise by up to 40 per cent. If approved, some centres that currently charge Rs 24,000 could see the rate soar to Rs 60,000. The civic body plans to implement the new rates immediately after approval.
This is not the first time such a proposal has been introduced. In a previous House meeting, it was referred to a committee for detailed review. With the committee now having submitted its recommendations, the proposal has been reintroduced in the House. The suggested price hike has already raised eyebrows among residents, and even members of the ruling BJP are expected to oppose it alongside the Opposition, citing public affordability and fairness.
Alongside this contentious issue, the House will also deliberate on a transformative plan for a smart AI-based parking project aimed at tackling the city’s growing traffic congestion and parking challenges. The project, discussed in detail at a recent meeting chaired by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, envisions a tech-driven, citizen-friendly system that leverages artificial intelligence to streamline parking management across 89 locations in Chandigarh.
The proposed system would offer real-time tracking of parking availability, automatic number plate recognition, and centralised monitoring. Additional features include dynamic pricing, pre-booking options, digital payments, and real-time updates available through a mobile app and digital display boards. The project also plans to enhance infrastructure with energy-efficient lighting, SOS emergency systems, and valet services at select locations. Importantly, the plan includes inclusive measures such as designated “Pink Periphery Zones” to ensure women’s safety, reserved parking spaces for persons with disabilities, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across multiple sites.
The parking committee has already invited suggestions from councillors to fine-tune the proposal before it is put up for final approval. If greenlighted, the smart parking initiative could elevate Chandigarh’s position as one of India’s leading cities in the realm of smart mobility and urban innovation.
