After Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Chandigarh, which forced UT officials to scramble for Ambassador cars to include in his cavalcade,it is now his mother turn to keep the officials on tenterhooks.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit Mandi in Himachal Pradesh,to address a poll rally on October 23,through Chandigarh. For the visit, the SPG (Special Protection Group) — incharge of her security — has demanded that the maximum vehicles from the UT Administration be put at their disposal for a drill on Sunday,October 21,ahead of her visit.

As Sonia will land at Chandigarh Airport before heading to the hill state,as per procedure, the SPG has to conduct a cavalcade exercise in the city on Sunday.

What has added to the Administration’s problems is that UPSC examination is to be held on Sunday and many UT officials are on duty as invigilators. Sources say that in the absence of their official vehicles, the on-duty UT Administration officials will have to make their own arrangements to reach the examination venues. Sources say that a request for requisition of as many as 15 vehicles has been forwarded by the Chandigarh Police to the Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shayin recently. “We will do as per norms,” he said when contacted by the Chandigarh Newsline.

Sources say that to meet the SPG demand, all the officials have been told to adhere to the request and have been asked to put their vehicles at protection group’s disposal. Further,it being a Sunday, all the drivers of the government officials who are also off, have been asked to join duty and be part of the exercise.
