Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami was elected as the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for the fifth term in a row on Monday.

Earlier this year, he had resigned from the post following the controversy over former Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal pleading guilty to ‘religious misconduct’ at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. His resignation was not accepted, and Badal had convinced him to resume as president.

The annual election for president was held at Teja Singh Samundri Hall in the Golden Temple complex.

A total of 136 votes were polled in the election. Dhami received 117 votes, while Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) candidate Mithu Singh Kahneke secured 18 votes, and one vote was declared invalid.

The newly elected office bearers include Raghujit Singh Virk as senior vice president, Baldev Singh Kalyan as junior vice president, and Sher Singh Mandwala as general secretary.

The interim committee members are Surjit Singh Garhi, Surjit Singh Tugalwala, Surjit Singh Kang, Gurpreet Singh Jhabbar, Diljeet Singh Bhindar, Harjinder Kaur, Baldev Singh Kaimpuri, Major Singh Dhillon, Mangwinder Singh Khaparkhedi, Jungbahadur Singh Rai, and Mithu Singh Kahneke.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leader Daljit Singh Cheema said, “This is a big success. Sukhbir Singh Badal had announced Advocate Dhami’s name after consulting all members. The members once again supported him with an overwhelming majority.”

Meanwhile, leaders of the Akali Dal (Amritsar) protested outside Teja Singh Samundri Hall, alleging that the election was conducted illegally. They stated that “no fresh election procedure has been initiated since 2011” and accused both the Union and Punjab governments of “suppressing the democratic voice of Sikhs.”
