AAP MP Harbhajan Singh opposes demolition of drug smugglers’ properties by Punjab Govt: ‘there are better solutions’

The Punjab Government has been projecting the demolition of houses as a “harsh action” against smugglers so that the chain of drug trade is broken in the state.

Talking to the media, Harbhajan Singh said, “Those selling drugs should be arrested. But in my opinion, somebody’s house should not be demolished. I am not in favour of properties being bulldozed.” (File Image)Talking to the media, Harbhajan Singh said, “Those selling drugs should be arrested. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Rajya Sabha MP and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh Wednesday opposed the demolition of the properties of drug smugglers by the Punjab Government, saying “bulldozing is not the solution”.

Talking to the media, Harbhajan Singh said, “Those selling drugs should be arrested. But in my opinion, somebody’s house should not be demolished. I am not in favour of properties being bulldozed.”

“If someone has built a shelter for himself, someone has got a roof, it should not be razed. I do not know what means he has used to build the property but if a poor man has got a roof then it should not be demolished. Action should be taken and they should be told that this business is harmful but bulldozing is not the solution. If we demolish someone’s house in which seven to eight people are living, this is not right. There are better solutions to handle this issue,” said the cricketer-turned-politician.

When asked about drug smugglers who usurp government land to build their houses, Harbhajan Singh said, “It is not easy to usurp government property. But if someone has done that then the government should take it back. But demolition is not the solution.”

Singh is the first one to speak against the demolition of drug smugglers’ properties in Punjab, and Opposition parties have not opposed the action by the government. The government has been projecting it as a “harsh action” against the smugglers so that the chain of drug trade is broken in the state.

This is not the first time Harbhajan Singh has not towed his party line. ln January last year, he said he would participate in the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram’s idol in Ayodhya on January 22 and “does not care if others choose not to attend it.” “I will go. No matter who wants to or not. It does not matter if the Congress wants to go or not, but I will certainly go,” Harbhajan Singh said then.

He was the only AAP leader at that time who had taken a stand which was seen as “different” from the party.
