A day after getting bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a Vigilance case, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Raman Arora, who was earlier jailed in a corruption conspiracy case, was arrested again Thursday.

The Rama Mandi police in Jalandhar arrested him again under extortion charges and produced him in court, where they secured his three-day custody for questioning.

The case stems from a complaint filed by a contractor named Ramesh, who alleged that the Jalandhar Central MLA extorted money from him.

According to the complainant, he had been paying Raman Arora Rs 30,000 on multiple occasions. “If (Raman) Arora was really taking money, the complainant should have approached (the) police at that very time. These cases are being slapped only to ensure (Raman) Arora does not step out of jail,” Raman Arora’s counsel, Navin Chadha, argued in court.

Raman Arora, who has considerable clout in the Rama Mandi area, which comes under his constituency, had been lodged in Nabha jail after being arrested on May 23 from his Ashok Nagar residence, days after vigilance authorities nabbed an assistant town planner (ATP) of the Jalandhar civic body in connection with a corruption racket.

Raman Arora’s son Rajan Arora, relative Raju Madan, Harpreet Kaur, and an aide named Makhija were also named in the conspiracy. Rajan Arora has already secured relief from the court, while Kaur and Makhija are out on bail.

After Raman Arora’s incarceration, the AAP appointed industrialist Nitin Kohli as in-charge of the Jalandhar Central constituency, sparking speculation about a possible bypoll. However, Raman Arora never resigned from his Assembly seat.
