Earlier this month, when city lad Aadil Bedi was practicing at the Chandigarh Golf Association Range,a close shot skidded off the driveway and the ball landed near Jeev Milkha Singh’s poster at the CGA range. Bedi rushed to the spot and was eager to see that he had not done any damage to the poster of somebody he has admired all along his short career.

On Friday, the 12-year-old youngster moved one step closer to realise his dream to be the top ranked junior golfer in India as he won in Category D with a three-day score of 78,80 and 82 in the Eastern India Junior Golf Championship held at Tollygunje Golf Club,Kolkata. It was Aadil’s first title of the year after he finished runners-up seven times in Category D in the Indian Golf Union tournaments last year.

“I was confident of winning the title and it was a tough competition. All the fellow golfers in my category have been playing well and Harshjeet Sethi played well today. It was disappointing to lose the top spot seven times during last year and wins like these will certainly boost my confidence. All of us hope to be like Jeev Milkha Singh and whenever we meet him at the CGS range,we proudly show him our trophies,”said Vivek High School student.

Bedi had been in tremendous form last year, when he claimed the fourth place in the Asia Pacific Junior Golf Championship and the second place in the Delhi Open Junior Golf Championship. He will now play in the Western India Junior Golf Championship at Mumbai in the last week of November and is eager to do well there.

“Western India is an important tournament for all of us as we will be playing in the All India Junior Golf Championship at Delhi after the tournament. IGU has been holding such tournaments and this year we have had more than 14 tournaments, where all top ranked domestic golfers take part,” said Bedi.

The Chandigarh golfer has been training with renowned coach Jessie Grewal at Chandigarh Golf Association and the coach believes that taking part in more tournaments will help his game. “Investing time at this age in golf is what makes youngsters like these so focused and talented. He has got a schedule which is oriented towards golf and that is his main strength,” said Grewal.
