Protesting against the police detaining her husband in a cheating case,a 34-year-old woman poisoned her two sons and then consumed some toxic substance in Rohtak district early Thursday morning.
The three were rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak in an unconscious state. While Lakshya (9) died in the evening, the condition of Alka and her other son Harshs (11) was stated to be critical.
Though Alka was initially booked for attempt to murder and attempting suicide, following after the death of her son, charges of murder were added against her.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters),Sumit Kumar, said: Yesterday late night ,we apprehended Ashish Jain a resident of Jind district. He was wanted by the police in a cheating case registered at the civil lines police station. A case was registered and on Wednesday,Jain was detained in Rajasthan. On Thursday,he was arrested and produced in the court, which remanded him to judicial custody. On Wednesday night,Assistant Sub-Inspector Shankar Lal had brought Jain to the police station and started questioning him. Alka followed Jain to the police station with her two sons and the three collapsed within 10 minutes, said police.
The police had ordered DSP Sumit Kumar to personally inquire into the case registered against Jain and also to submit a report on the incident involving Alka and her two sons. Following the incident,Shankar Lal has also been suspended.
According to the police,Jain, his wife and their two sons had been on the run for the last 20 days. The facts came to light, when the police recorded Alkas statement in the hospital. Alka,in her statement, mentioned that Ashish had lost his parents at a very early age and was raised by his maternal grandfather. Owing to a property dispute with his cousins,he lost all his savings and thus, the family was finding it difficult to make ends meet. Ashish had a debt of over Rs 50 lakh, said the DSP.
Alka added that she and jain had decided that they will commit suicide,if things become worse. They had bought celphose tablets from Jind and had been on the run for the last 20 days. They were moving in their car and had been staying at inns in Rajasthan. Following a tip-off,we apprehended Ashish. Since Alka was already carrying celphose tablets, she poisoned both her sons and consumed it herself, the DSP added.
