As many as seven people have died and two have gone missing in Haryana during the recent rain since Sunday. On Tuesday, a major breach in the Narwana Branch canal — because of the overflow of water in it in Kurukshtera district — submerged thousands of acres of land.
Kurukshetra SP Surinder Singh Bhoria told The Indian Express that the canal was carrying a huge quantity of water and efforts were on to fix the breach. Sources said the canal started overflowing when water from the Markanda river started mixing in it near Jhansa village of Kurukshetra district.

Two persons from Panchkula’s Pinjore area in two separate incidents were washed away in a river on Monday due to its flow of water. One of them has been identified as Naresh (48) and the other as Chander Shekhar (22-23). According to the police, there was no clue to both till Tuesday evening. On Monday, three persons of a family died due to a landslide caused by heavy rain in a locality known as Devalghati in Panchkula’s Pinjore area.

According to the officials, a house with a brick wall and tin roof collapsed in the landslide on Monday. An official said: “Five people were inside at the time of the incident. Three of them lost lives after being stuck in debris while two people were rescued with minor injuries.”

Three who lost their lives have been identified as Aakash (19), Kartik Kumar (8) and Priya (5). The official said: “The family comes from a low-income group with all the members working as daily wage earners. As per the revenue official report, the victims and their family members were originally from Nepal. They had shifted to India from Nepal 30 years back.” The officials said that the case will be sent to the state government for financial assistance.

Earlier, a labourer and his wife lost their lives at Sagga village of Karnal district on Sunday night when a house — in which the couple was sleeping with their children — collapsed during rain. Two deaths have been reported from Ambala district, said an official.

Meanwhile, rain has caused losses to the standing crops of paddy and vegetables in several parts of Haryana. According to Karnal deputy director of agriculture and farmers welfare department, Aditya Dabas, the crop of paddy has submerged in the fields of those areas which are situated near the Yamuna river in the district.

“In three days, 220 MM rainfall has been recorded in our area. If the crop continues to be submerged for a few days more, it will cause losses to it,” added Dabas. At 11 am on Tuesday, 3.59 lakh cusecs of water was released into Yamuna river from Yamuna Nagar’s Hathni Kund Barrage. An alert is sounded when the level of water at Hathni Kund Barrage touches the mark of 2.5 lakh cusecs. The Kurukshetra deputy director of the department, Pradeep Meel, said that the rain has caused losses to the crop but its exact extent can be known only in the coming days.
