It has been over 24 hours since the violent clash between two groups in Ram Darbar Phase II left several people injured on Sunday night. The police, however, are yet to register a case in the matter.
Explaining the situation,Station House Officer Inspector Bhupinder Singh said: Nobody has turned up with a complaint. We cannot initiate action in the matter.
The SHOs statement is in contrast to what the law says.
In cases where a formal complaint is not lodged by the public, the police can become a complainant and register the matter, said Gaurav Bhaiyya,a lawyer with the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
A violent clash involving nearly 200 people had taken place between two groups in Ram Darbar Phase II around 9 pm last night. The residents said the clash was the fallout of an incident reported four days ago when a newly-married couple from Phase II was allegedly assaulted by some Phase I residents.
A group of residents from Ram Darbar Phase II reportedly attacked their counterparts from Darbar Phase I with swords and sharp-edged weapons. The residents of Phase I retaliated and the clash that followed left several injured and caused damage to public and private property, including four cars.
Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava, meanwhile, maintained: I have asked for the details of the incident and will personally look into the matter.
