2 women constables endure horror start to year,assaulted on way home

The police have arrested the two and booked them for rash driving and attempt to murder.

THE New Year’s eve ended on a sour note for two Chandigarh Police women constables,who were allegedly assaulted by two residents of Manimajra late on Tuesday night. The police have arrested the two and booked them for rash driving and attempt to murder.

The incident took place around 2 am when constables Sonia Dhankar — posted at JW Marriot — and Poonam — on duty ar Sector 34-35 dividing road — were returning home from their duties. Both were on a two-wheeler. Near a gurdwara in Manimajra,Sonia dropped Poonam. As she was leaving,a car hit her two-wheeler from behind.

Sonia,who fell,got up and tried to stop the car. The driver of the car,Navdeep Singh (27) — a businessman — and his accomplice Inderjeet Singh (24),a graduation student,tried to flee.

While attempting to stop the car,Sonia fell on its bonnet and was dragged for about 50 metres. “Navdeep pulled the brakes thrice in an attempt to dislodge Sonia from the bonnet. Failing to do so,he stopped the car and Inderjeet went to push Sonia away from the car,” Manimajra police station SHO Charanjit Singh said.

He added: “Meanwhile,Poonam noticed her colleague in trouble and came running. She pulled Navdeep out of the car. Navdeep in turn assaulted Poonam and fled. Inderjeet,however,was caught by Sonia. Poonam called the Police Control Room and Inderjeet was arrested. Navdeep was arrested a few hours after the incident.”

Both accused have been booked under sections 337 (endangering life),279 (rash driving),323 ( voluntarily causing hurt) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. They were produced in a local court on Wednesday,which remanded them to judicial custody.
