The Chandigarh Police has arrested two persons accused in a cheating and fraud case involving fake US currency exchange.

The accused have been identified as Mohammad Hazrat (32), a resident of Mundi Kharar, Mohali, and Sangam (35), of Kajheri village, Sector 52, Chandigarh. Both are unemployed.

According to the police, a case was registered on the complaint of Ashish Kumar, a resident of Zirakpur, who works in accounts branch of a Kharar-based firm. On July 31, Ashish was approached by Hazrat, who claimed to possess $4,000 and offered to sell it at half the market rate. The meeting was fixed in Burail, Sector 45, where Ashish arrived with Rs 1.70 lakh.

Hazrat, accompanied by associates, allegedly showed him two bundles of $20 notes in a small bag and, after taking the money, handed over the bag. When Ashish opened it later, it was empty. The accused neither delivered the dollars nor returned the cash.

Both suspects were arrested on August 7, after being identified by the complainant.

Police said further investigation is underway, and the duo will be produced in court for judicial custody.
