1,400 seats vacant in government schools on Chandigarh’s periphery

While most government schools in the city are flooded with applications for admission to Class XI,around 1,300-1,400 seats are lying vacant in schools on Chandigarh’s periphery even after the second round of counselling.

While most government schools in the city are flooded with applications for admission to Class XI,around 1,300-1,400 seats are lying vacant in schools on Chandigarh’s periphery even after the second round of counselling. The third round of counselling will be held in August.

The schools at the periphery include the Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) in Behlana,Kaimbvala,Manimajra,Khudda Ali Sheher,Raipur Khurd,Sarangpur,Maloya and Mauli Jagran. Humanities is the only subject available in these schools other than the vocational courses. According to the principal of GSSS Maloya,“There are many seats still lying vacant in our school. This is usual every year. We expect seats to be filled in the next counselling.”

“The vocational seats are filled but the it will take another month for the Arts stream seats to fill up. We are waiting for the third counselling in August,” said the principal of GSSS Manimajra.

As per officials in the UT Education Department, the reason for the vacant seats in the periphery schools is the different preferences among students. According to officials, there are 40 seats vacant in Khuda Lahora school, while 60 seats are empty in Kaimbvala and 50 in Raipur Khurd.

The principal of another government school said,“There is a trend among students to prefer admission in schools located in the middle of the city, instead of being in the surrounding areas. Students face conveyance problems, due to which their first preference is always schools located near by.”

Director of Public Instruction (Schools) Upkar Singh said,“The entire system depends on the students’ preferences. It usually happens every year, the seats remain vacant till July. But there many students who are in the waiting list. Those who haven’t got admission till now will get it in these schools, probably in the third counselling.”
