10-yr jail for killing cows in state

Punjab has become the third state in the country after Uttarakhand and Rajasthan to implement a 10-year jail term for killing cows.

Punjab has become the third state in the country after Uttarakhand and Rajasthan to implement a 10-year jail term for killing cows. The state will be setting up ‘cow protection cells’ with SP/DSP as the nodal officer in every district. The government has also given the authority of checking and penalising the slaughter houses to the board.

Addressing the media,Kimiti Bhagat,Chairman,Punjab Gau Sewa Board, said,“The Punjab government has increased the punishment for killing cows from 1 year to 10 years. The government decision was taken after a recommendation was made by the board”.

In the past year, the state has registered 270 cases for cow slaughter or for selling cow’s meat. Every day over 15 trucks carrying such meat pass through Punjab. At present the state has 410 cow shelters which has over two lakh cows and buffaloes. The Board has drawn an ambitious plan of tagging these cows in so that a proper count can be maintained.

He added,“At present there are over 81,000 stray cows which are causing accidents and many other problems.” To over come the problem of stray cattle, the board has drawn up a project under which the animal catchers will be hired to catch these animals and take them to the nearest cow shelters. These cows will be tagged,so that the the shelter owners do not free them after some time.

The Board has requested the government to remove cow shelters from the Rent Control Act. The board in the near future will be setting up a control room in their office and also be procuring four vehicles to catch offenders and ferry injured cows to shelters.
