Tennis A sense of pride coupled with new found confidence is hard to miss as Reema Sharma introduces herself. Sharma has been retailing lingerie at a small store in Sector 41 for a little over two years. Multi-tasking has been her strength – she manages her home,a child and the shop – but Sharma admits the hard work put in did not translated into higher earnings. “I now know where I went wrong,” said Sharma, who completed her ‘10,000 Women Entrepreneurs Certificate Programme’ at Indian School of Business (ISB),Mohali, this month.

Sharma, along with classmate Betty Nangia, director of Betty’s Holistic & Skin Care,an organic beauty product brand, were awarded for creating the ‘Best Business Plan’ in their batch of 28 students.

The ‘10,000 Women’ is a five-year,global initiative that seeks to empower women who traditionally have not had access to high-quality business education, leveraging a network of education, development and business experts. The initiative was founded after a research conducted by Goldman Sachs and the World Bank that educating women entrepreneurs could lead not only to increased revenues and more employees for businesses, but also to healthier, better educated families and, ultimately, more prosperous communities.

Chosen from hundreds of applicants across north India,Sharma and Nangia made it to the four-month module. “Leveraging all that we had learnt,we put forth our business plans and I was surprised it made a winning impression,” said Nangia, who is all set to roll out a chain of franchise stores in the coming months. Sharma wants to use the knowledge gained to “train her employees and delegate tasks further” to increase turnover.

More than 30 of the world’s leading business schools are participating in the ‘10,000 women’ initiative.
