(Express photo by Bhupendra Rana) More than a month before the Ganesh Chaturthi festivity commences in September, police on Monday issued prohibitory orders in Vadodara. The orders are linked to the dimensions of Ganesh idols to be installed in the city as well as mandatory immersion in artificial lakes. The ten-day festivity begins September 19.
The ten points enlisted in the notification issued by In-charge Commissioner of Police and Joint CP Manoj Ninama on Monday prohibit creating, selling, and installing clay Ganesh idols taller than nine feet, including the seat or podium on which it rests. In the case of idols made of PoP (Plaster of Paris) or fibre, the permitted height is only five feet.
All idols — clay, PoP, and fibre — will have to be immersed in the artificial lakes to be set up by the civic body as per the area permit issued. People traveling outside their permitted route for the immersion of idols will be deemed as violators.
The notification also prohibits sculptors from placing idols ready for sale in unclean places or in a way that may cause traffic snarls. Sculptors have also been directed not to throw away unsold or damaged idols in an improper manner.
The notification also specifies prohibition on the use of signs and symbols in the design of the Ganesh idols that could “hurt the religious sentiments”.
The notification also prohibits the use of colours with a ‘toxic formulation’ that cannot dissolve in water after immersion.
