6 held for pelting stones at Mangaluru mosque

The Karnataka Police Monday arrested six men in Mangaluru for allegedly pelting stones at a mosque.

The six accused have been identified as Bharat Shetty, 26, Chennappa Shivananad Chalavadi alias Muttu, 19, Nitin Hadap, 22, Sujit Shetty, 23, Anappa alias Manu, 24, and Preetham Shetty, 34 – all residents of Mangaluru.

A police officer said the accused came on two bikes and threw stones at the Majidulla Hudajumma Mosque in Katipalla around 9.50 pm on Sunday when it was being decorated with lights for Eid-e-Milad celebrations.

Mosque president K H Abdul Rahman filed a police complaint and the police arrested the accused based on CCTV footage. The police have also seized a Swift car, two bikes, and four mobile phones used in the crime.

Notably, Bharat Shetty has 12 criminal cases registered against him, Chennappa Shivananad Chalavadi has five cases, Nitin Hadap has one case, and both Anappa and Preetham Shetty have two cases against them.

Meanwhile, right-wing activists in Dakshina Kannada district led by Sharan Pumpwell held a demonstration against the administration for allowing a bike rally on BC Road to celebrate Eid-e-Milad.

However, the police stopped the protesters and the situation remained under control.
