Seat-blocking scam: Bengaluru police issue notices to three engineering colleges
Bengaluru’s BMS Engineering College, Akash Institute of Engineering and New Horizon Engineering College allegedly blocked government seats to convert them into management-quota seats.

The Bengaluru police have issued notices to the city’s three reputable engineering colleges that were allegedly involved in a seat-blocking scam.
A police officer said the notices had been issued to BMS Engineering College, Akash Institute of Engineering and New Horizon Engineering College, which had allegedly blocked government seats to convert them into management-quota seats to be sold for Rs 30 lakh or more. The colleges were allegedly helped by agents in the scam.
A complaint lodged by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) on November 13 alleged that 52 candidates’ login credentials were illegally accessed to block government-quota seats in institutions such as the three engineering colleges.
The Government found that 2,625 students had not claimed seats they had chosen, despite having attended the all three rounds of counselling.
According to Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar, government seats that remained vacant include 92 at BMS College of Engineering, 82 at Akash Institute of Technology, 52 at New Horizon College of Engineering, 45 at Vivekananda Institute of Technology, 34 at Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering, 32 at Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, and 31 at MVJ College of Engineering.
The police have arrested B S Avinash, 36, who was an outsourced employee at the KEA; Tilak R G, 60; Noushad Alam, 42; Dilshad Alam, 33; Prakash S R, 42; Ravishankar, 56; Puneeth S L, 27; Shashikumar S K, 34; Sriharsh T M, 42; and Purushottam, 24 in the case. Sriharsh, Tilak and Naushad are in four-day police custody.
Avinash is said to be the kingpin of the scam and believed to have shared the students’ data with agents. The accused are said to have perpetrated the seat-blocking scam for eight years.
