Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the much-awaited 13.71 km Metro stretch between Whitefield (Kadugodi) and Krishnarajapura (KR Puram).

PM Modi, who onboarded the Metro train from Whitefield along with Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials after purchasing a ticket, was seen interacting with Metro employees, construction workers and government school students.

According to BMRCL officials, five trains will be pressed into service on the 13.71 km Metro line which consists of 12 elevated stations. The stretch will connect lakhs of passengers to IT parks, Fortune 500 companies, hospitals and shopping malls, among other important areas.

The IT stretch connecting Krishnarajapura to Whitefield line is notorious for traffic and it normally takes nearly one hour to cross this stretch by road. However, with the newly launched Metro line, travel time is expected to be reduced anywhere between 22-24 minutes. Operations are set to start Sunday, Anjum Parvez, managing director of BMRCL, said.

The 12 stations on this stretch are Krishnarajapura, Singayyanapalya, Garudacharyapalya, Hoodi, Seetharam Palya, Kundanahalli, Nallur Halli, Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Pattandur Agrahara, Kadugodi Tree Park, Hope Farm Channasandra and Whitefield (Kadugodi). The trains are expected to run at a frequency of 12 minutes along this stretch.

While the K R Puram and Whitefield stretch is part of the Metro work between Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield station, the Metro work between K R Puram and Baiyappanahalli will be complete after six months.

However, the trains will run in the ‘down line’ (Whitefield to Krishnarajapura side) between Garudacharpalya and Krishnarajapura stations because of the absence of a track crossover at Krishnarajapura. According to officials, as per the design, there is no crossover at Krishnarajapura because the line extends to Baiyappanahalli. As a result, only one train will operate at a given time between Garudacharpalya which reaches Singayyanapalya station, followed by Krishnarajapura. “Passengers will be directed to use only one platform for entry and exit at Krishnarajapura and Singayyanapalya Metro stations for the time being, until the full line till Baiyappanahalli opens,” a BMRCL official said.
