In a major move towards easy and environmentally responsible travel, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Refex eVeelz have partnered to offer electric taxis for travellers. The project, which was unveiled at the airport in Bengaluru on World Environment Day, demonstrates BIAL’s dedication to sustainability and lowering carbon emissions.
Travellers may conveniently reserve these environmentally friendly vehicles at airport taxi stands or through the “BLR Pulse” mobile application. The fares are reasonably priced where the first four kilometres are charged at a minimum of Rs 100, and each subsequent kilometre is charged at a rate of Rs 24 to increase access and affordability. As many as 175 SUVs are a part of the initial fleet when the rollout begins, with more expected to come.
Hari Marar, the CEO and Managing Director of BIAL, emphasised the airport’s leadership in providing electric taxi services. These taxis have been introduced as a part of a larger plan to switch to electric power for all airport vehicles, which will greatly reduce carbon emissions and improve the environment.
To improve inclusivity and customer safety, the BIAL has revamped electric taxis and offered them in two different colours: teal and pink. Teal taxis serve the general public and represent sustainability.
Pink taxis are run by women drivers and are only for female clients. Their goal is to offer a secure and safe mode of transportation. A “pink card” with emergency numbers for the duty manager, local police, and ambulance services is given to each passenger.
A major step towards ecological sustainability was taken with the planting of 100 saplings on the airport site in honour of World Environment Day.
Additionally, EV cars and semi-robotic aircraft towing vehicles have been deployed by the airport on both the airside and landside.
This programme is a component of the airport’s long-term objective to switch to sustainable vehicle options.
