The state government on Tuesday told the Karnataka High Court that no precipitative steps or actions will be taken by it on the issue of the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) till June 12.
A bench of Justices S R Krishna Kumar and Ramachandra Huddar was hearing a petition filed by the Association of Registration Plate Manufacturers last year when the government made the submission.
The counsel for the petitioners had submitted that the case was set for further hearing on June 11, while a notification dated February 16 had extended the date till May 31.
It was submitted that if the time limit was not extended beyond May 31, then the appeal itself would be rendered infructuous and the manufacturers would suffer hardship.
The state’s counsel submitted that no precipitative action would be taken by the state between the end of May and June 12. The court took notice of the state’s undertaking and the matter will be heard further on June 11.
The association had originally challenged a state government notification and a circular issued on August 17 and 18, which had ordered that high security plates from manufacturers authorised by the vehicle manufacturers shall be supplied and attached by original dealers. The notification had also said that the process would be completed within three months of the notification. The petitioners had sought a stay on this, arguing that the current policy would end up favouring only a few manufacturers.
