A 48-year-old man bludgeoned his wife to death with a metal dumbbell before dying by suicide on the outskirts of Bengaluru, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as Basavachari, a welder, and his wife, Suma, 36, a homemaker. The couple lived with their two sons in Maruthi Nagar, Vijayapura town, Bengaluru Rural district.

The incident came to light around 1.30 pm on Tuesday, when their 14-year-old son returned from school and discovered the bodies. He also has a younger brother, aged 12.

The police said Suma’s body was found on the bed in the bedroom with severe head injuries. Blood stains were visible on the bed sheet, floor, and wall, and the dumbbell used in the assault lay on the bed.

Basavachari was found dead in the hall. Preliminary investigations suggest the couple, who would often argue over domestic matters, got into a heated fight after sending their children to school. In a fit of rage, Basavachari allegedly struck Suma with the dumbbell. Realising she was dead, he allegedly took his own life.

The couple had been married for 16 years. Suma hailed from Hassan, and the family had been residing in Maruthi Nagar, where Basavachari operated a welding shop nearby.

According to police, disputes related to a property site might have triggered the fatal altercation. Further investigation is underway.
